Sustainable Weaving Practice Trainings
A Step Towards Long-Term Viability of Cotton and Textile Industries
ချည်မျှင်နှင့်အထည်အလိပ်လုပ်ငန်းများ ရေရှည်ရပ်တည်နိုင်ရေး အလေ့အကျင့်များ
From March 9 to 15, 2025, SheCreates organized a “Sustainable Weaving Practice Training 1” in Yangon with the support of Community Partners Myanmar (CPM) and partner organizations.
This program was planned, designed, and discussed over a period of three months and was implemented within a total project timeline of ten months.
The objectives were: To preserve traditional knowledge and skills in hand-spun cotton and backstrap weaving by learning from experts. To ensure the long-term sustainability of these crafts. To improve the quality and marketability of handwoven textiles.
Over seven days, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical lessons, covering topics such as: Yarn Theory; Hand-spinning techniques; Processing from raw cotton: Seed removal, cotton ginning, carding, roving, hand spinning, yarn sizing, twisting, and setting up the loom; Braiding techniques: Border pattern braiding for shawls; Textile care: Washing, drying, finishing, steaming (treatment house methods); Cost calculation for handwoven textiles; Packaging and display techniques; and Quality enhancement for textile production.
A total of 37 artisans and textile creators from across Myanmar applied, and 17 participants (9 handweavers and 8 textile designers) were selected from Kachin, Shan, Mon, Magway, and Yangon regions. On the final day (March 15, 2025), participants explored Yangon’s textile and handicraft market by visiting: SheCreates Showroom, Bogyoke Market, Hla Day Handicrafts Store, and Turquoise Mountain Textile Workshop & Showroom.
After the training, weaving-related equipment and materials will be delivered to four designated weaving centers, and Treatment House (Steaming House) techniques will be shared with local weaving studios. In May, a second training session will be held, where participants will apply their knowledge to create high-quality garments using handwoven fabrics. On March 16, 2025, Goethe-Institute Myanmar hosted a special event: “Taste of Weavers & Creators: A Gathering of Textile Enthusiasts.” This event featured: A cotton life-cycle exhibition; Live hand-spinning demonstrations; Networking for textile lovers; A marketplace featuring the works of trainees and SheCreates members; A Discussion Circle on textiles; A cultural dance performance by SheCreates members; and A traditional snack market. Around 400 guests attended and enthusiastically participated in the event.
Despite challenges, essential tools such as cotton gins, carding tables, spinning wheels, and weaving looms were gathered from various regions. Traditional techniques were passed down by respected weaving mentors, including: Daw Khin Than Myint & Daw Htay Htay Yee (Myanmar Yanant); Daw Khin Myint & Daw Yi (Retired weaving teacher from Myitkyina & Hand-spun cotton master); Daw Khin Lai Lai Phyu (Textile Engineer); Ma Khin Myo (Experienced Weaver from Yenanchaung), Ma Tu Tu (Experienced Weaver from Pakokku) and Daw Phyu Ei Thein (Sunflower Natural Dye Textiles) – Technical advisor for training planning and trainer on quality enhancement and textile finishing.
